10 Things You DIDN’T Know About The Wizard Of Oz

Testing Your Knowledge On The Legendary Film

This August, Sons Of Gotham wants to celebrate the nostalgic and amazing history of the legendary film, The Wizard Of Oz. The film was originally released on August 25, 1939. To celebrate, here are ten things you didn’t know about The Wizard Of Oz.

The Debut

While The Wizard Of Oz may have premiered in theatres in 1939, it wasn’t until 1956 when it debuted on television for the first time. In fact, its TV debut led to its status as an all-time classic.

It Ain’t Easy Being A Lion

Think Bert Lahr had an easy time playing the Cowardly Lion? The costume weighed nearly 100 pounds! We have to say, he made it look easy.

Ruby Slippers

The book did things a bit different. In L. Frank Baum’s 1900 novel, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, Dorothy’s slippers were silver. The movie changed them to ruby to make them pop better on screen.

The Dorothy That Almost Was

Legendary actor Shirley Temple was in talks to be cast as Dorothy for the film. However, she was only 11 at the time and the producers were worried her vocals wouldn’t quite fit.

Wicked Makeup For A Wicked Witch

The makeup used for the Wicked Witch was so toxic to the human body that actress Margaret Hamilton had to live off of liquids during filming to avoid accidentally ingesting any!

VHS

The film had been a classic for some time before it was released on VHS. In fact, it didn’t come out until 1980.

Chocolate Oil

Did you think The Tin Man’s oil was real oil? Think again! Real oil didn’t appear so well on film, so the crew used chocolate sauce. This showed up much clearer in the final product.

Costumes, Costumes, And More Costumes

How many costumes do you think the film required from start to finish? In truth, the film used over three thousand!

Scarecrow Gets His Brain (Kind Of)

When Scarecrow gets his brain, the poor guy still states the isosceles Pythagorean Theorem incorrectly.

Slapstick Comedy

Remember the scene where Dorothy slaps The Cowardly Lion? Judy Garland actually had the toughest time getting through that scene without laughing!
