The History Of The Justice League

The History Of The Justice League

DC Comics Legendary Team

The Justice League has a long, rich history in the world of DC Comics. Ever since they first appeared in 1960, legendary characters including Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, and more have come together to fight evil. Here is a quick guide for the history of The Justice League.

First Appearance

The Justice League debuted in 1960 in The Brave And The Bold #28. The first incarnation of the team included Batman, Aquaman, Flash, Green Lantern, Martian Manhunter, Wonder Woman, and Superman. These seven heroes joined together to take down Starro The Conqueror, a massive alien resembling a starfish. Shortly after, The Justice League gets their own series. It wasn’t until two years later, however, that The Justice League would get their origin story. In this flashback comic, the team forms to ward off alien invaders.

1960s: The First Years

Two years after their first appearance, The Atom joins the team! The Justice League decides he has proven himself after saving them from an atomic bowling ball (yes, you read that correctly). Later, the League crosses paths with The Justice Society Of America. This team actually served as the prototype for the Justice League, and appeared back in the 1940s. Other characters such as Green Arrow and Hawkman join as well during this time.

1970s: Big Changes Ahead

To kick off the new decade, the League relocated their secret base to outer space! Another big change during this decade was the team sharing their secret identities. Before then, they had each vowed to secrecy. One notable story in particular during this time was the body-swapping story involving The Secret Society Of Supervillains.

1980s: Crisis Strikes!

1985 introduced one of the most legendary stories in DC Comics, “Crisis On Infinite Earths.” This epic crossover event condensed multiple earths into one singular universe. Not long after, the series relaunches with a new team.

1990s: Shaken To The Core

The Death Of Superman is one of the most well-known and best-selling comics of all time. The famous supervillain Doomsday kills Superman in 1992, shaking the comic world to its core. A few years later Mark Waid and Alex Ross would do something similar with the immensely popular “Kingdom Come” story.

2000s: Relaunch

The relaunched series “The Justice League Of America” brought the team back to its roots. Essentially, this solidified Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman as the main three characters for the League.

2010s: The New 52

In perhaps their biggest relaunch to date, DC Comics recreated their line with “The New 52.” These 52 new comic series reimagined their famous heroes and teams in new origins, including The Justice League. However, it would not be too long until DC’s “Rebirth” line came around, which changed the team up once more. This team has similar members to the movie universe. They have Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Cyborg, Flash, and TWO Green Lanterns!
